I originally read this as a young teen and loved it. Yes, it does follow some of the typical romance patterns but the story was completly orginal. Alaina was so much of what I identified with at that age and aspired to from the metamorphosis from tomboy into beautiful young woman, the heroine–she’s pulling the hero out of scrapes multiple times, not sitting back wilting and waiting, some fantastic friends, and some less than stellar family.
Alaina is many things, but foremost among them: Since this was another ahes moment in time, I decided to pick this “keeper” I had given five stars to back up to see if time had changed with how I felt then.
The first publisher on her list, Avon, quickly purchased the novel and arranged an initialprint run. The various roles young southern lady Tne plays come through believably, especially through the eyes of our honorable and somewhat hapless Yankee doctor hero, Cole. In a drunk stupor, Cole awakes and mistakes Alaina for a prostitute in a brothel.

Still the book was fun overall, epic in proportions, the love was equal parts fun and heartwarming by highlighting the connection between our leading pair, and the plotting was laced with engaging intrigue. The Flame and the Flower revolutionized mainstream publishing, featuring an epic historical romance with a strong heroine and impassioned sex scenes.

Part one ends with the conclusion of the war as a crippled and limping Cole takes his unhappy and acrimonious wife Roberta back to his home in Minnesota.
